How to get driver’s licence in Western Australia
WA has a Graduated Licensing Scheme that involves three licensing stages and takes a minimum of 2.5 years to complete.
From age 16 you are eligible to commence the process by attempting a 30-question, multiple-choice Learner’s Theory Test that assesses road safety and low-risk driving. Passing provides a learner permit valid for 3 years.
To progress to your red Ps (provisional licence) you must complete 50 hours of supervised driving and pass both the Practical Driving Assessment (PDA) and the Hazard Perception Test (HPT). These requirements must be completed in a specific order and based on certain time periods.
Before you can sit your PDA, you must complete at least 25 supervised hours and be at least 16 years and 6 months old. You are not required to have held your learner permit for a minimum period.
After passing the PDA you must complete a further 25 hours of supervised experience on your L plates (to reach the required 50 hours). You can then sit the HPT.
To sit the HPT you must be at least 17 years old and have waited 6 months since passing your PDA (during which time you can gain the required 25 hours supervised experience). When you pass the HPT you will be issued a provisional license.
You must be on your provisional licence for 2 years before you progress to a full licence. The first 6 months of this period uses red Ps and the last 18 months uses green Ps. Progression from red Ps to green Ps and eventually a full licence is automatic so long as a good driving record is maintained.
